In the winter of 2018, after a personal and professional upheaval, Louise Steinman took creative refuge in San Francisco at The Firehouse, reconfigured from its original use into a space for artists’ residencies and community gatherings. During this contemplative time alone, she was mesmerized by a cover of a book, a self-portrait by the German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon, murdered in Auschwitz. With Dream Awakened Eyes is the result of Steinman’s healing exchange—via text and drawing—with Salomon’s provocative gaze.

With Dream Awakened Eyes is published by Firehouse Press and is distributed by Ayin Press.
